Having worked in the intersection between government, the public sector, private enterprise and the community and voluntary sectors for the last 15 years or so, I decided to start a blog with thoughts and observations – and as a way to contribute to debates. The blog presents critical but constructive takes on developments (and regressions) in public policy, new ideas (old ideas), techy wonking from time to time and the odd flight of fancy every now and then … You can also get new posts and links to others if you follow me on Twitter @bennettmike or connect on LinkedIn http://uk.linkedin.com/in/bennettmike.
Before setting up Public Intelligence, I spent 12 years working for SOLACE, the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers. Firstly as the Branch Policy Officer in Scotland, secondly as Assistant Director General and latterly as Co-Managing Director. During my time there I directed SOLACE’s policy development and influencing activities, for example the Commission on Managing in a Political Environment, I was involved in numerous sector or government-led working groups, I designed and delivered a programme of networking and learning events for senior people, including the SOLACE Summit, and was the founding Editorial Director of the SOLACE Foundation Imprint. I was also fortunate to work closely with a range of local government business partners and to understand how they worked well together. Before that I worked as a consultant and research fellow at the Scottish Local Authorities Management Centre in the University of Strathclyde where our clients included Scottish ministers, the Scottish Parliament as well as most local authorities and a wide range of other public bodies.
Throughout this time I have remained an active researcher publishing in peer reviewed journals on issues of public policy, management theory and the politics of research.
Since January 2012 I have been a Senior Adviser to operational improvement and efficiency specialists, Newton.
